SCCA Race on North 1.1 Mile Club Course

Highlights of this event announcement:
3 hour wheel-to-wheel race on the 3.3 mile long course.
LeMans start.
Anyone 21 or over can enter, as long as they have a state driver's license.
$500 cash prize for 1st, $200 for 2nd, $100 for 3rd, $50 for 4th, $25 for 5th in each class.
Standard VW Beetles with the only required safety equipment- "approved seat belts".
Helmets are required- "borrow one from a neighbor who rides a motorcycle".

As it turned out, sanity and the insurance company prevailed and the race was run as a Solo/gymkhana type event. 
Volkswagen Grand Prix, October 13, 1968

The track promoted this event itself.  It was a combination road race, drag race, car show event for Beetles.

Bulldozer Enters Track Without Proper Credentials

You've heard the stories.  Here are the pictures that prove they're true!  A Ft. Wayne Regional race was disrupted when a huge Caterpiller tractor towing an earth scraper bucket broke through a chain link fence, mowed down a guardrail and stopped in the middle of the track.

Paddock gossip told of the operator's dissatisfaction at not being paid by the track management.  Nonetheless, his protest action landed him in jail.
